According to The Guardian, Australian endurance athlete Phil Gore completed 152 hourly laps of 6.71km in Perth’s Forrestdale suburb, establishing an unofficial record for the longest Backyard Ultra. His attempt lasted six days and 15 hours and fell short of his Project 168 target of running one lap every hour for a full week.

Backyard Ultra events require competitors to begin a 6.71km lap at the top of every hour. Runners who finish early can rest before the next start, while anyone unable to complete a lap within the hour is eliminated. Gore ran around Forrestdale Lake and used a bed at Armadale Soccer Club, sometimes sleeping for no more than 15 minutes between laps.

Gore, 40, said the transition from sleep to the start line was the hardest part of the event. He previously set a 119-hour world record at Dead Cow Gully in 2025 and said he had felt he had more to give. He has competed in 16 Backyard events and won 14, but said the traditional format can prevent the final runner from reaching their limit.

Supported by friends and family, Gore fuelled his run with items including Nerds, meat pies, Coco Pops, chicken curry with rice and McDonald’s cheeseburgers. He completed lap 152 in 58 minutes, then began lap 153 at 4pm on day seven. About 25 minutes into that lap, he stopped after deciding he could not maintain the pace needed to finish. A livestream of the effort raised $285,000 for Telethon to support medical research and health services for children in Western Australia.
