According to ABC News, Lucas Herrington has made a bright start to his English Premier League career at Hull City after a breakthrough World Cup and a record transfer deal. The central defender, who turns 19 this weekend, said his parents had taught him humility and the importance of continuing to work hard.

Herrington made his Socceroos debut in March before appearing at the World Cup in North America. Interest from clubs including Barcelona and Liverpool followed, but he joined newly promoted Hull City on a five-year contract. The reported $33 million fee, with add-ons, made him Australia’s most expensive player.

He made his Hull debut from the bench in the Tigers’ upset win over Manchester United, only a week and a couple of days after arriving in England. His mother and agent were in the stands. He later came on in a win over Coventry and started Hull’s EFL Cup penalty shootout victory against Stoke.

Herrington said he has enjoyed his first weeks in England, including exploring the area with his mother, while also acknowledging the appeal of the Premier League’s expensive-car culture. He is the only Australian in England’s top flight and said he wants to learn from older teammates and treat every match as a lesson.

Former Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimović contacted Herrington after the Australian missed a penalty in the Socceroos’ World Cup round-of-32 shootout loss to Egypt. Herrington said Ibrahimović told him not to fear anyone and to enjoy the opportunity. The Queensland product is now hoping to play in the Socceroos’ upcoming friendlies against Brazil in Townsville and Brisbane.
