According to Al Jazeera, explosions were reported in the Strait of Hormuz hours after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the waterway. Iranian media said blasts near Qeshm Island suggested multiple antiship missiles and drones had been fired at vessels transiting the strait, though Iranian authorities did not confirm attacks that day.

Shipping has continued to face attacks in the waters. An Indian cargo ship was hit last week, killing a sailor. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says the strait is closed to ships that do not coordinate with Iranian authorities, and released video on Sunday of what it described as the second US underwater drone seized this month.

Tehran has instructed shipping companies to use a temporary Iranian-approved route and pay relevant fees, while saying the strait will not fully reopen until a US blockade on Iranian ports ends. Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority said it would blacklist charterer companies that direct crews to use routes it deems unauthorised. Washington says its warships are guiding oil tankers through another route, while US Central Command said on September 19 that its forces had helped move more than one billion barrels of crude from the Gulf over roughly two months.

At the United Nations General Assembly, Iran proposed reopening the strait within a week if seven conditions were met, including lifting the blockade, releasing frozen Iranian funds and ending attacks on all fronts. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran remained committed to the conditions and would await a response through mediators including Pakistan, Qatar and Oman. Analyst Andreas Krieg said further attacks or attempted attacks on tankers and regional infrastructure were likely, followed by limited US strikes against Iranian maritime assets.
