The US House of Representatives has approved legislation to give aid to Ukraine and impose sanctions against Russia, with more than a dozen Republicans defying their leadership to vote in favour of the bill. Some 18 Republicans joined Democrats to back the Ukraine Support Act on Thursday, which passed in a 226 to 195 vote.
The legislation aims to provide more than $1 billion in security and reconstruction aid to Ukraine, alongside authorizing $8 billion in financing for defense operations. However, its future remains uncertain as it must also pass through the Senate and receive Trump’s signature.
This vote marks another instance of Republicans diverging from Trump’s stance, particularly after a symbolic vote earlier in the week where some Republicans supported a resolution to limit his military actions in Iran. This resolution was seen as a public rejection of Trump’s approach to foreign policy.
The House was able to bring the Ukraine Support Act to a vote after Republican supporters collaborated with Democrats on a discharge petition, bypassing party leadership. The political landscape continues to shift, especially as Trump faces internal challenges from his party regarding his administration’s policies.
In related news, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict. Zelensky emphasized the need for a ceasefire during these proposed negotiations, although Putin has previously dismissed such a possibility. Meanwhile, tensions remain high as recent drone attacks in Ukraine have escalated the situation further.
