The United States House of Representatives is set to vote on a resolution to halt the administration of US President Donald Trump’s military actions against Iran. This vote, scheduled for Thursday, follows a failed war powers resolution in the Senate, which was voted down 47-53 largely along party lines.

According to Al Jazeera, the House, controlled by a slim Republican majority, faces significant challenges in passing any measure that would limit Trump’s military authority. However, the upcoming vote is seen as crucial for lawmakers to publicly state their positions on the ongoing conflict.

Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican sponsoring the resolution, emphasized the importance of accountability, noting that lawmakers may be reluctant to associate themselves with the war if it continues to face public disapproval. He has joined mostly Democrats in condemning Trump’s actions as unconstitutional.

Critics argue that the military operations initiated on Saturday alongside Israel are unjustified and lack evidence of an immediate threat from Iran. The administration has provided various justifications for its actions, but these claims have been met with skepticism from legal experts and lawmakers.

The resolution’s outcome is expected to be close, with Republicans holding 218 seats to Democrats’ 214, and three seats vacant. If the resolution passes, it would require a subsequent Senate vote and could face a presidential veto. Additionally, a separate proposal from some Democrats seeks to allow a 30-day extension for military actions before requiring congressional approval.
