According to The Guardian, an Israeli soldier shot Palestinian man Qassem Hussam in the leg during a confrontation involving settlers and residents in Faqqua, in the occupied West Bank. The incident began after settlers entered the area with livestock, and villagers tried to stop them from grazing on Palestinian-owned land, witnesses said.

Mohammed al-Sheikh, 34, who said he was beside Hussam, told the newspaper that Israeli soldiers arrived and began shooting. He said Hussam fell after one soldier fired, and residents moved him away in a private car because they could not get an ambulance to the area. The Palestine Red Crescent said Hussam, a man in his mid-30s, was taken to hospital in a light-to-moderate condition.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed it had received a report of friction between Israeli civilians and Palestinians near Faqqua and said the person who fired was an IDF soldier. It said troops at the scene fired into the air and toward a Palestinian. The military said commanders were reviewing the incident and would send their findings to relevant authorities for examination. It was also investigating the soldier who shot the man, apparently in breach of army protocol, according to the Times of Israel.

Video of the confrontation shows Israeli soldiers and settlers facing unarmed Palestinian men before shots are fired. The case comes as settler violence has continued to rise in the West Bank. OCHA says more than 1,111 Palestinians, including at least 243 children, have been killed in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since 7 October 2023.
