The Liverpool area, southwest of Sydney—the capital of New South Wales, Australia—this afternoon, Saturday 15 August, held a ceremony to install a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Big Park in the city center. The park is close to the train station, the shopping precinct, Liverpool Hospital and Institute, a branch of Western Sydney University, and several private and public schools.Attendees included members of Liverpool City Council led by Mayor Ned Mannoun, a number of members of parliament, and representatives from the Catholic, Maronite, Melkite and Syriac churches. Among them were Anba Tony Percy, bishop of the Catholic Church in Sydney, representing Archbishop Anthony Fisher; Anba Mar Mari Emmanuel, bishop of the Assyrian Church of the East; and Fr. Anthony Marjan, pastor of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Liverpool.The mayor welcomed those present and congratulated them on the installation of the Virgin’s statue. The Catholic bishop spoke of his joy at the presence of the statue, saying it brings comfort and love to park visitors of all ages—adults, youth and children—and he concluded his remarks with a prayer. Fr. Anthony Marjan also spoke, expressing his happiness with the idea when it was proposed to him, and noting that the statue’s installation took place in August, a special month in which the Church observes the fast of the Blessed Virgin Mary and celebrates the feast of her Assumption.
