The streets surrounding the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Mary and the Great Saint Mar Mina in Bexley, Sydney, witnessed a large procession on the evening of Friday, 11 September, celebrating the Coptic New Year, “Nayrouz.”The Diocese of Sydney and its affiliated churches organized the procession in cooperation with the cathedral’s priests and servers. Priests and deacons from the diocesan churches carried the relics of saints and martyrs with candles after vespers, honoring the memory of the Coptic Church’s martyrs through the ages.The celebration was led by His Grace Bishop Daniel, Bishop of Sydney and its jurisdictions, and was attended by thousands of Copts from churches across the city, along with a delegation of priests, community leaders, and representatives from several churches.The event was attended by the Consul General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Sydney, Reem Zahran; former Prime Minister Tony Abbott; and a number of federal and local parliament members, including Edmond Atallah, Member of the New South Wales Parliament and Assistant Minister for Police and Counter-Terrorism, representing the state’s Premier, Chris Minns.
