In recent years, media personalities have increasingly found themselves at the center of political and ideological debates, and Indian Muslim journalist Arfa Khanum Sherwani is no exception. Known for her controversial views and strong opinions, Sherwani has faced widespread criticism for her vocal support of Islamist causes and her harsh rhetoric against anti-jihad entities. Her recent tweet mourning the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has sparked outrage, further intensifying the debate around media influence, bias, and the intersection of journalism with extremist ideologies. This article explores Sherwani’s troubling affiliations, accusations of anti-Hindu propaganda, and the broader implications of her media presence on India’s political landscape.
Following the elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar by the Israel Defense Forces, Arfa Khanum Sherwani, an Indian Muslim journalist and senior editor of The Wire – a news portal known for its strong bias towards leftist and Islamist ideologies – tweeted, “Why exactly are Indian fascists celebrating the assassination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar?” This tweet openly demonstrated her sympathy for the notorious terrorist group Hamas and her deep-seated animosity towards Jews and anti-jihad entities.
Earlier, Sherwani posted another tweet in Hindi, which reads: “पुलिसकीहिंसाकाशिकारअभीमुसलमानहोरहाहै, आपपॉपकॉर्नगोदमेंरखकरमनोरंजनकामज़ेलेरहेहैं।क़ानूनकेराजकेख़ात्मेकीशुरूआतकमज़ोरतबक़ोंसेहोतीहैलेकिनख़त्मआपकेदरवाज़ेपरहोगी।सिस्टमजबभ्रष्टहोजाताहैतोकिसीकोनहींबख़्शता।अपनीबारीकाइंतज़ारकीजिये!” [Muslims are currently the victims of police violence, and you are enjoying it as entertainment with popcorn in hand. The breakdown of the rule of law begins with the weaker sections but will end at your doorstep. When the system becomes corrupt, it spares no one. Wait for your turn!]. This statement is viewed by many as a direct incitement, possibly encouraging Indian Muslims to rise against Hindus and the nation.
According to a report by OpIndia, Sherwani conducted“a live discussion downplaying the atrocities faced by Hindus in Bangladesh, disguising it under the pretext of protests”. The report further notes that the political upheaval in Bangladesh is widely suspected to be part of a regime change operation orchestrated by the US deep state in collaboration with figures like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and George Soros, as well as the Islamist group Hizbut-Tahrir (HuT).
Indian journalist Dibakar Dutta, in a tweet, remarked, “Arfa Khanum Sherwani and Mohammed Zubair have done everything they could to whitewash the Islamist onslaught on Hindus in Bangladesh”.
Sherwani has also been accused of running a sinister propaganda campaign against Hindus while actively promoting blatant Hinduphobia. Despite her controversial ideology, she enjoys the support of several Western organizations.
In May 2024, a bombshell report published by The Commune revealed startling secrets about Sherwani. It was disclosed that she had kept her marital status concealed, but it was later revealed that her husband is Azim Khan, a former “Political Analyst” for the US government.
The report further stated, “This revelation raises questions about Khan’s role within the US government, particularly his involvement with the US Embassy in India and his facilitation work for the Ford Foundation in 2006. Such connections call into question the potential influence on Arfa’s journalistic integrity and the objectivity of her reporting”.
The report also highlighted that “Azim Khan holds positions as the director of SIT’s International Honors Program in human rights and co-chair of the MA in Global Health at the School for International Training (SIT)”. Furthermore, it pointed out that the president of SIT, Sophia Howlett, has extensive ties to the Open Society Foundations, where she has worked as a consultant, speaker, and evaluator.
The report from The Commune also noted that “allegations regarding Arfa’s purported CIA connections surfaced in September 2018 when she participated in a three-week fellowship program organized by the East West Center (EWC), during which she visited the Pentagon. Over time, suspicions linking the EWC to the CIA have emerged”.
Additionally, The Pamphlet, in an exclusive report, further exposed Sherwani’s alleged CIA connections.
In an article published by The Jaipur Dialogues, it was noted that in 2022, “Sherwani made headlines for her vehement demands for legal action against former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, following Sharma’s controversial remarks about the Prophet Muhammad during a television debate.Sherwani’s aggressive stance and inflammatory language have repeatedly placed her at the center of communal controversies”.
During India’s 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the United States, the UK, and several EU nations launched a coordinated propaganda campaign, funneling millions of dollars into a particular political party with the goal of defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and establishing their exclusive dominance by installing their loyal elements in power. Arfa Khanum Sherwani and her news portal, The Wire, are reportedly among the top recipients of this funding, carrying out malicious attacks as directed by the Deep State and Soros.
Despiteserious allegations against Arfa Khanum Sherwani – including her open promotion of Islamist jihad, terrorism, and hatred against India and Hindus – her presence is largely confined to social media platforms and The Wire. While Sherwani continues to operate under the protection of certain Western organizations, her influence remains largely limited to social media and The Wire, leaving many to question the broader agenda behind her actions.
For India’s national security, the need for a thorough investigation into Sherwani’s alleged connections with Islamist groups, foreign intelligence agencies, including Pakistani ISI and political actors has never been more urgent. Her case serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between journalism, political manipulation, and extremist rhetoric in today’s media-driven world.
