According to Cnbc, earnings reports, inflation readings and housing data are set to shape investor attention this week as elevated oil prices and higher bond yields influence markets. The consumer price index is due Wednesday, followed by the producer price index on Thursday.
Economists polled by FactSet expect September headline consumer inflation to rise 3.6% from a year earlier, compared with a 3.4% gain in August. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, is expected to increase 2.4%, matching August. The Federal Reserve’s inflation target is 2%, while CME FedWatch data showed more than 80% odds of rates being held steady in October after last month’s first rate increase in three years.
Tuesday’s calendar includes existing home sales and quarterly reports from Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Johnson & Johnson. Goldman is expected by LSEG to report earnings per share of $13.02 on $16.74 billion in revenue. Wells Fargo is projected to post $1.85 per share on $22.32 billion in revenue, with investors watching consumer lending, deposits, net interest income and investment banking.
Johnson & Johnson, the only non-bank among the highlighted holdings, is expected to report $2.53 per share in earnings and $25.25 billion in revenue, according to LSEG. Attention will center on its Innovative Medicine business, including the launch momentum of oral psoriasis drug Icotyde, as well as Tremfya and Darzalex. Investors will also watch its MedTech cardiovascular portfolio, the Ottava surgical robot rollout and the planned orthopedics divestiture.
Bank of New York reports Thursday, when the producer price index, retail sales and initial jobless claims are also scheduled. LSEG estimates BNY earnings of $2.27 per share on $5.55 billion in revenue. Friday brings industrial production and capacity utilization data, completing a week in which corporate guidance and economic releases could affect interest-rate expectations.
