According to Cnbc, July inflation reports and Cardinal Health earnings are the two major events investors will watch in the coming week, while updates on the Iran war could also affect market action. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said early last week that a deal may be coming, but that news did not materialize. The market may need further confirmation of progress to sustain optimism tied to Bessent’s comments.
The consumer price index is due Wednesday, Aug. 12, followed by the producer price index on Thursday, Aug. 13. FactSet economists expect headline CPI to rise 3.4% year over year and core CPI to gain 2.5%. For wholesale PPI, expectations call for a 0.1% monthly increase in the headline measure and a 0.3% gain in the core measure. Core indexes exclude volatile food and energy prices.
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has cited the Iran war’s effect on energy prices and said the AI capital-expenditure cycle has caused price increases for chips, high-tech equipment, software and utilities. Cook said inflation risks now outweigh employment risks and later said she was prepared to act, if necessary, on a rate hike. July nonfarm payrolls showed a loss of 23,000 versus a Dow Jones consensus for an 83,000 gain, while unemployment fell to 4.1% and participation declined to 61.4%.
Existing home sales data arrive Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET, while the July retail sales report is scheduled for Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET.
