An inquest has opened into the deaths of three sisters in the sea off Brighton beach. Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, who were all living together in Greenford, London, died on 13 May in what police called a “terrible tragedy”. At the inquest at Brighton & Hove Coroner’s Court, senior coroner Penelope Schofield offered her condolences to their father Joseph, who attended via a remote link.
During the proceedings, Schofield addressed Joseph directly, acknowledging the profound pain of losing his daughters under such circumstances. An investigation by Sussex Police into how the sisters came to be in the water is ongoing, with officers confirming that there was no evidence of third-party involvement in their deaths.
The court was informed that the recorded cause of death for the sisters has yet to be ascertained. Schofield expressed hope that the inquest would help quell social media speculation surrounding the incident. The bodies of the sisters were recovered from the sea by the RNLI, with Jane Adetoro and Christina Walters pronounced dead at the scene, while Rebecca’s body washed ashore near the Black Rock.
In a poignant tribute, their father remarked that “no words can truly describe the pain of losing three daughters in the prime of their lives,” highlighting their roles as his joy and strength. The inquest is set to continue in early October, as Sussex Police continues to explore various lines of inquiry related to the sisters’ presence at the beach that morning.
