IPART RATE PEG REVIEW SHOULD EASE COST OF LIVING

NSW Labor says the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal’s decision to review local government rate pegging is an opportunity to ease the cost of living.

Rate pegging limits the amount a council can raise rates by without applying for a special variation.

However the number of councils applying for rate variations has increased dramatically, with IPART approving 86 applications for additional special variations in June this year.

NSW Shadow Minister for Local Government, Greg Warren MP, said a review was certainly needed though he stressed that it should not come at a cost to the state’s ratepayers.

“Many households are struggling to make ends meet due to the increase in the cost of living.

“The last thing they need is to be unfairly slugged with higher rates to compensate for an inefficient and ineffective NSW Government.

“I certainly welcome the review but by no means should it be used an excuse to slug residents throughout NSW with higher rates.”
