Arabic version: إيران تعين محمد زلقدار كمدير جديد للأمن
Iran on Tuesday appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new head of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), following the death of Ali Larijani in an airstrike last week. Zolghadr, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), takes on a critical role as he navigates ongoing military pressures from the US-Israel conflict and various domestic challenges. According to Al Jazeera, his extensive military background positions him as a key figure in Iran’s security decision-making.
Zolghadr is recognized as a seasoned security figure, having fought in the Iran-Iraq war and held numerous senior positions within the IRGC. His appointment is seen as essential for navigating the complexities of Iran’s current security landscape, particularly in light of ongoing strikes across the country and internal unrest linked to foreign influence.
The SNSC role, closely aligned with the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, requires a leader capable of managing both security and strategic initiatives. Zolghadr’s strong military credentials may appeal to hardliners in Iran, who believe he can better address the current wartime challenges compared to his predecessor.
His early days in office will involve addressing immediate threats posed by ongoing attacks, particularly in western and northwestern Iran. Additionally, Iranian authorities have intensified efforts to arrest individuals suspected of collaborating with foreign entities, a measure intended to prevent security breaches. Zolghadr’s ability to maintain stability will be crucial as Tehran continues to assert its military capabilities in the region, including missile strikes and operations in the Strait of Hormuz, which impact global oil prices.
Zolghadr’s leadership may significantly influence negotiations with the US, as he will likely need to approve any agreements reached at the negotiation table. His appointment underscores Iran’s strategy to bolster its national security framework with a military-oriented approach, reflecting the leadership’s intent to address both external and internal pressures effectively.
