Iran has announced plans to create a communication channel with the United States to report any breaches of a recently signed memorandum of understanding (MoU). This decision was confirmed by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi after indirect technical discussions between Iran and the US took place in Qatar.

According to Al Jazeera, the MoU aims to conclude the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran. Gharibabadi noted that part of the $6 billion in frozen Iranian assets would be allocated for essential goods needed by Tehran. He emphasized that discussions regarding the expenditure of these funds were held with Qatari officials.

During the meetings, Qatari and Pakistani mediators reported positive developments in the negotiations surrounding the MoU. The discussions included key issues such as the flow of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and maintaining a ceasefire, which has seen violations since the MoU was established last month.

The memorandum, brokered by Qatar and Pakistan, includes a 60-day ceasefire and provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. However, there have been ongoing disagreements between the US and Iran regarding the interpretation of the MoU, leading to military confrontations in recent weeks. Despite these challenges, traffic through the Strait has partially resumed.

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with US officials, including special envoy Steve Witkoff, to reaffirm Qatar’s commitment to mediation efforts in the region. US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the progress of the negotiations, stating that the denuclearization of Iran is progressing positively. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance cautioned that there are no guarantees against returning to combat before the MoU’s deadline next month.
