Arabic version: إيران تضرب قاعدة أمريكية بعد رفض ترامب اتفاق هرمز
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it struck a base used by United States forces in response to US attacks on an Iranian target near the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC reported that the attack took place at 4:50 am (0120 GMT) following a US military operation that targeted a location on the outskirts of Bandar Abbas Airport. This escalation occurs as a fragile ceasefire between the two nations faces increasing pressure, with ongoing negotiations to end the conflict.
According to Al Jazeera, the IRGC’s statement followed a US attack that involved aerial projectiles. While the IRGC did not disclose the specific location of the targeted base, Kuwait’s military confirmed that its air defenses were responding to what they termed an ‘enemy’ attack.
In response, an unnamed US official indicated that the US military shot down four Iranian attack drones and struck a ground control station in the port city of Bandar Abbas that was about to launch a fifth drone. The official characterized these actions as measured, purely defensive, and aimed at maintaining the ceasefire, despite the rising tensions.
During a cabinet meeting, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that his administration was making headway in negotiations to end the war but rejected claims regarding a compromise deal with Tehran. He dismissed reports suggesting a draft agreement that would restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and warned that no single country would control the waterway. Trump threatened Oman, emphasizing that it would need to adhere to international norms regarding the strait.
The ongoing hostilities have affected oil prices, which saw a rebound after a significant drop earlier. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have indicated that Trump’s aggressive stance will not deter Iran from its goals, including uranium enrichment and lifting sanctions. Experts suggest that Trump is facing a challenging situation, as the economic battle between the US and Iran intensifies amid the current geopolitical climate.
