Tehran, Iran – United States President Donald Trump’s announcements about securing major concessions from Tehran have riled supporters of the Iranian establishment, prompting rejections and clarifications from the authorities. According to Al Jazeera, Trump’s claims came just days before the expiration of a two-week ceasefire reached on April 8.

Trump stated that Iran and the US would jointly dig up the enriched uranium buried under the rubble of bombed Iranian nuclear sites and transfer it to the US. He also claimed that Iran had agreed to stop enriching uranium on its soil. Furthermore, he declared that the Strait of Hormuz had been opened and would never be closed again, despite ongoing US naval blockades.

In response, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf dismissed Trump’s statements as lies, asserting that such claims would not lead to success in negotiations. The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) quickly countered Trump’s assertions, stating that the Strait of Hormuz is once again heavily restricted and under strict management of the armed forces due to continued acts of piracy and maritime theft under the so-called label of a blockade by Washington.

Supporters of the Iranian regime voiced concerns over Trump’s claims, questioning the legitimacy of any major concessions. Former state television chief Ezzatollah Zarghami expressed frustration over the lack of transparency from the government, while other officials warned against conceding to what they described as a vile enemy. Social media in Iran reflected a similar sentiment, with many users criticizing the government for potentially compromising national interests.

As criticism mounted, Iranian state media and analysts directed their ire towards Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who had tweeted about the Strait of Hormuz’s status. Calls for clarification from Araghchi increased as state-affiliated media echoed sentiments of confusion among the public. Armed supporters took to the streets, rallying in support of Iran’s military alliances in the region, even as the country continues to grapple with severe economic challenges exacerbated by ongoing sanctions.
