Arabic version: زيارة رئيس إيران بيزشيكيان إلى باكستان بعد محادثات الولايات المتحدة وإيران
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to arrive in Islamabad for a state visit that is as much a gesture of gratitude as it is a statement of intent. The trip on Tuesday – his first overseas visit since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28 – comes a day after Pakistan and Qatar announced that the first round of high-level US-Iran talks in Burgenstock, Switzerland, had yielded a 60-day roadmap towards a final deal, according to Al Jazeera.
Pezeshkian’s timing is critical; he arrives in Islamabad having just signed the most significant diplomatic agreement of his presidency. Middle East analyst Reza Khanzadeh noted that this visit is essential for Pezeshkian, as he seeks to convert this fragile agreement into political capital – at home, within the state, across the region, and internationally. During his visit, Pezeshkian will meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who mediated the Switzerland talks, and President Asif Ali Zardari, to discuss the outcomes of the Switzerland talks and explore avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation.
This marks Pezeshkian’s second visit to Pakistan as the Iranian president. His first trip followed a 12-day Iran-Israel war in June 2025, highlighting the evolving nature of Iran-Pakistan relations. Following a series of military escalations in January 2024, both nations managed to restore diplomatic ties, culminating in a series of agreements aimed at boosting trade and security cooperation. Notably, Pezeshkian’s choice of Pakistan for his first official visit underscores the importance of this relationship.
The recent US-Iran discussions have produced several outcomes, including the establishment of a high-level political committee and working groups focused on nuclear issues and sanctions. This diplomatic engagement is seen as a vital step toward building political trust, which analysts argue is crucial for the success of any technical negotiations. Pezeshkian’s visit is expected to further solidify Pakistan’s role as a mediator in the ongoing US-Iran dialogue, enhancing its diplomatic standing in the region.
