According to BBC News, the 2026-27 Irish League season will begin as scheduled on Friday night after Northern Ireland Football League proposals were overwhelmingly approved at an extraordinary general meeting on Tuesday night. The meeting had been called in an effort to prevent delays to the new Irish Premiership and Championship campaigns.

For the EGM to proceed, 90% of NIFL’s 47 member clubs had to agree to its staging. Although it appeared for much of Tuesday that the quorum might not be reached, the required percentage was ultimately met. The vast majority of clubs then backed the league’s proposals, exceeding the 75% threshold required.

The resolutions passed were Approval of League Restructuring, Adoption of League Rules (2025/26) and Approval of Competition Rules (2026/27). NIFL said all resolutions had been successfully passed, allowing the season to commence as scheduled. Cliftonville’s home match against Crusaders is set to open the top-flight weekend, while Strabane Athletic will play Institute in the second tier.

The vote followed a legal challenge by Banbridge Town over the restructuring of Northern Ireland’s third tier. Banbridge are among 10 clubs moving from the Premier Intermediate League to the new Conference League, which will be run by the Northern Amateur Football League. The Irish FA appeals committee found it was unlawful for those clubs to no longer be NIFL members without approval being secured under NIFL regulations.

NIFL acknowledged a procedural error and said it would commission an independent review. The Championship has expanded from 12 to 16 teams, with Moyola Park, Strabane Athletic, Rathfriland and Newry City promoted from last season’s Premier Intermediate League. The new 12-team Conference League is also due to include St. James’ Swifts and Rosario.
