According to ABC News, Australian swimmer Isaac Cooper has voluntarily stepped down from the Dolphins’ athlete leadership group following a reported drinking session during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Cooper was reported to have been drinking last Wednesday night when he was expected to support teammates at Tollcross International Swimming Centre. The report also said he was seen drinking at the Australian team hotel earlier that day.

“Isaac did not attend the final night of the swimming competition or final team meeting in Glasgow, which is in conflict with team expectations,” Swimming Australia said in a statement. “Isaac has since voluntarily stood down from the team’s athlete leadership group.”

The 22-year-old had been scheduled to swim the 100m backstroke final that night, but withdrew after qualifying eighth-fastest. Swimmers were expected to support Australian teammates when they were not racing, and Cooper also missed the team meeting.

Cooper won Commonwealth Games gold in the 4x100m medley after swimming in the heats. He also placed sixth in the 50m backstroke final, having won silver in that event at the 2024 world championships. His next competition is the Pan Pacific championships in the United States, starting August 12.
