According to ABC News, Fremantle forward Isaiah Dudley has turned an unlikely route from state league football into an AFL finals campaign after being overlooked in the 2021 draft. Listed at 168 centimetres as the league’s shortest player, Dudley was told his fitness and lifestyle needed improvement, feedback he said motivated him to change.

Dudley credits former Central Districts coach Paul Thomas with helping him build better habits. Central Districts also put him through a 10-week personal-training-style program during a season, with Thomas saying the work took Dudley’s game “in leaps and bounds” the following year. Dudley said he became a better person and player, moving beyond being a forward who stayed close to goal.

His 2024 SANFL season drew Fremantle’s attention and led to an invitation to train with the Dockers. The club signed him in the supplemental selection period on the eve of its first 2025 pre-season game against the Indigenous All-Stars. By round three of his first season, Dudley made his debut in a Western Derby against West Coast and kicked two first-quarter goals in Fremantle’s win.

He played 16 games in his first AFL year and has appeared in all 24 of Fremantle’s matches so far this season, kicking 28 goals. As the Dockers prepare to face Geelong in a must-win semifinal at Perth Stadium, Dudley said he still pinches himself over reaching an AFL finals series. He hopes his path encourages others who miss out in the draft to keep pursuing opportunities and rely on coaches and their close support networks.
