According to Allafrica, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki held extensive talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in El Alamein City during the mid-morning hours of 6 October 2026. The discussions covered bilateral relations and other matters described as vital to both countries.

The two leaders stressed the need to consolidate a political climate that rejects external agendas of interference. They said such a climate was imperative to safeguard Somalia’s territorial integrity, stability and peace, as well as the unity of its people.

President Isaias said federal governance architectures in Somalia and other countries in the region had often failed to meet people’s hopes and aspirations for unity and cohesion. He said political frameworks that polarize socio-economic, religious and ethnic differences, foment recurring crises and encourage foreign interventions should be replaced by citizenship-based governance architectures.

President Hassan Sheikh conveyed gratitude to President Isaias and the Eritrean people for their firm stance and support for Somalia’s government and people.

President Isaias also met Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Chairman General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in El Alamein the previous afternoon. Their discussions addressed bilateral relations and regional and international matters of mutual interest, as part of regular consultations between the leaders and on the margins of the Quadrilateral Consultative Summit.
