According to Al Jazeera, Israel and Morocco have agreed to upgrade diplomatic ties by elevating their respective missions to embassies and appointing ambassadors in both countries.

The agreement followed a meeting in New York on Wednesday between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The meeting was hosted by Mike Waltz, the United States ambassador to the United Nations.

The foreign ministers also agreed to advance economic and trade relations. They plan to complete two agreements by the end of the year, covering investment protection and the prevention of double taxation.

In a joint statement issued on behalf of the three countries, the US mission to the UN said that establishing “full diplomatic, peaceful and friendly relations between Morocco and Israel” serves the common interest of both countries and would advance peace.

Israel and Morocco also agreed to expand air travel, including reinstating direct flights operated by carriers from both nations. They confirmed plans for high-level bilateral visits in the coming months. The announcement came a day after the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, which seek to normalise ties between Israel and Arab and Muslim-majority countries.
