Arabic version: إسرائيل تفرض قواعد وصول أكثر صرامة في مسجد الإبراهيمي بالخليل
Israeli measures have increasingly restricted Palestinian access to the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, a significant Islamic site and symbol of Palestinian identity. According to Al Jazeera, these restrictions have intensified since the beginning of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023.
The Ibrahimi Mosque, located near the home of local resident Aref Jaber, has undergone significant changes since the 1994 massacre of Muslim worshippers. Following that tragic event, Israeli authorities implemented measures to control the mosque, leading to the division of Hebron into areas of Palestinian and Israeli control. As a result, settlement activity has surged in the area, further complicating the situation for local Palestinians.
Residents like Jaber have faced increasing challenges in accessing the mosque, including the closure of key entry points and the establishment of metal barriers. What was once a short walk for worshippers has turned into a lengthy detour of nearly three kilometers. Jaber noted that these measures are often enforced under security pretenses, severely limiting the freedom of movement for Palestinian residents while allowing settlers to navigate the area freely.
Israeli authorities have also recently expanded their control measures, akin to those seen at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. This includes the removal of mosque staff and restrictions on construction activities without Palestinian approval. Local officials have condemned these actions as part of a broader strategy to alter the mosque’s status and diminish its Islamic identity, particularly during significant religious periods like Ramadan.
The Hebron Municipality has voiced concerns over these developments, describing them as a threat to worship freedom and public order. The ongoing situation at the Ibrahimi Mosque highlights the complex and often volatile dynamics in Hebron, where historical grievances continue to shape the present-day reality for its residents.
