Arabic version: إسرائيل توسع وجودها العسكري في غزة على الرغم من خطط إعادة الإعمار
Recent satellite imagery has revealed that Israel is significantly expanding its military fortifications across Gaza, particularly in Rafah, despite plans for civilian reconstruction under a US-backed initiative. According to Al Jazeera, images taken from February 20 to March 4, 2026, show no new construction or rubble clearance at the proposed site for the ‘New Rafah’ project, indicating that the initiative is facing delays before it even begins.
The analysis of satellite images from Planet Labs and Sentinel Hub indicates a stark contrast between the slow pace of civilian rebuilding and the rapid expansion of Israeli military infrastructure. Notable developments include extensive fortification efforts at strategic locations such as al-Muntar hilltop in Shujayea and new military outposts in Khan Younis. Furthermore, ongoing construction of trenches and roads linking military sites suggests the establishment of permanent military bases throughout the region.
The ‘New Rafah’ project, which was promoted by US officials as a vision for a revitalized Gaza, has raised concerns over its implications for local populations. Critics, including the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, argue that the plan could lead to forced demographic changes, confining Palestinians to densely populated areas surrounded by military zones and checkpoints.
Additionally, satellite images have documented the transformation of the so-called ‘yellow line’ ceasefire boundary into a permanent border. Recent constructions have encroached significantly beyond the designated line, further solidifying Israel’s military presence in the area. Despite a declared ceasefire, violence in Gaza continues, with reports of ongoing military actions and high casualty figures, raising questions about the effectiveness of the reconstruction efforts and the humanitarian situation on the ground.
