Arabic version: غارات جوية إسرائيلية تقتل خمسة في لبنان رغم تمديد وقف إطلاق النار
According to Al Jazeera,
A series of Israeli air attacks on southern and eastern Lebanon has killed at least five people and injured more than a dozen, according to the Health Ministry. These strikes occurred on Sunday, despite Israel’s recent agreement to extend a ceasefire with Lebanon.
The attacks targeted several municipalities, including Tayr Felsay, Tayr Debba, Az-Zrariyah, and Jebchit. In a separate incident, at least three people were also killed in an Israeli attack on the village of Jouaiya. The Israeli military has also issued forced displacement orders for residents in the villages of Sohmor, Roumine, al-Qusaibah, Kfar Hounah, and Naqoura in southern Lebanon.
“It’s been another violent day here in southern Lebanon,” reported Al Jazeera’s Obaida Hitto from the southern city of Tyre. He noted that, contrary to the ceasefire’s intentions, Israel has intensified its military actions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated during a cabinet meeting that Israel is focused on protecting its communities while combating an enemy that seeks to outsmart them.
Sunday’s attacks follow recent talks in Washington, D.C., where Lebanon and Israel agreed to a 45-day extension of a ceasefire that has not been observed since it began on April 17. The ceasefire extension aims to facilitate a U.S.-mediated security track starting on May 29, with further discussions scheduled for June 2 and 3 in Washington.
Hezbollah has voiced strong opposition to the direct negotiations, emphasizing that ongoing Israeli attacks undermine any diplomatic efforts. The humanitarian impact of the conflict has been severe, with more than 1.2 million people displaced between March and April, according to the Danish Refugee Council. The war has also inflicted significant economic damage on Lebanon, with losses exceeding $25 billion since the conflict began in 2024.
