Arabic version: قوات الاحتلال الإسرائيلي تقتل الصحفية اللبنانية أمل خليل أثناء التغطية
On April 22, the Israeli regime assassinated Amal Khalil, a prominent Lebanese journalist known for her extensive reporting on the lives of people in southern Lebanon during periods of Israeli military action. According to Al Jazeera, Khalil was well-loved in Lebanon, with her brother describing her as someone who was present in every home.
For two years, Khalil faced direct threats from the Israeli regime, including a menacing call from a Mossad agent. Despite these threats, she continued her work, embodying the spirit of defiance against oppressive forces. Her assassination occurred while she was on assignment near the strategic town of Bint Jbeil, a town significant for its resistance during the 2006 Israeli invasion.
Khalil was traveling with freelance photographer Zeinab Farraj when an Israeli drone strike targeted a vehicle ahead of them. Seeking safety, the two women entered a nearby building, which was later bombed by Israeli forces. While Farraj was rescued by a Red Cross team, Khalil was found dead when they returned.
Her killing is reminiscent of the assassination of Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran Palestinian journalist who was also targeted while reporting in a conflict zone. Since October 2023, more than 250 journalists and media workers have been killed in the region, marking a tragic milestone in the deadliest conflict for the press in recorded history.
The systematic targeting of journalists by the Israeli regime highlights a disturbing trend of impunity and violence against those who seek to document the realities of conflict. Amal Khalil’s death serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by journalists in Lebanon and Palestine, and the urgent need for accountability in the face of such violence.
