Italian cricket is currently facing a significant crisis following allegations of sexual assault involving a senior official. Prabath Ekneligoda, the women’s cricket co-ordinator for the Federazione Cricket Italiana (FCRI), is under investigation for allegedly inappropriately touching a member of the Azzurri women’s national team. This incident reportedly took place during a training session last year, and multiple board members have resigned in response to the situation, according to BBC News.

The allegations were initially reported to the police in Rome in March 2022 by a player who has represented Italy. The player, whose identity remains confidential due to legal protections, stated that the assault occurred during a massage for a knee injury. Fearing repercussions on her position within the team, she hesitated to report the incident. An investigation was concluded by a Rome prosecutor in November 2025, with Ekneligoda being interviewed by police the following month.

Ekneligoda’s lawyer has publicly denied the allegations, claiming that ulterior motives exist behind the accusations and that a witness supports his account. The FCRI has acknowledged the ongoing legal proceedings and stated that they will cooperate with the relevant authorities, emphasizing their commitment to fairness and transparency in handling the matter.

Despite being suspended from his role in November, Ekneligoda has continued to be involved in Italian cricket activities. He was seen attending matches and events associated with Italy’s T20 World Cup debut, raising questions about the federation’s handling of the allegations. Reports indicate that the FCRI leadership, including president Maria Lorena Haz Paz, were aware of the serious nature of the claims prior to the World Cup.

The situation has placed Haz Paz’s position under scrutiny, with concerns that reputational damage and potential legal issues could hinder the growth of cricket in Italy following their historic T20 World Cup appearance. Italy’s team, while not advancing to the Super 8 stage, managed to secure a victory against Nepal and put up a strong fight against England during the tournament.
