Jack Karlson’s memorable speech, famously declaring, “Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest!” has been officially added to Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA). This addition marks a significant moment in the preservation of cultural history, as Karlson’s 1991 arrest video has become a viral sensation and a staple of internet meme culture.

According to The Guardian, Karlson’s statement during his arrest outside a Chinese restaurant in Queensland has resonated with audiences for decades. His speech is now one of nine audio pieces included in the NFSA’s Sounds of Australia collection for 2026, which highlights recordings of historical, cultural, and aesthetic significance.

The Sounds of Australia collection, established almost two decades ago, is curated from public nominations. Each year, a panel of NFSA sound experts votes on which recordings will be added. This year’s list also features a pedestrian crossing signal, Marcia Hines’ dance track “You,” and Rosie Batty’s poignant acceptance speech from the Australian of the Year award.

Among the other notable additions are Joe Dolce’s comedy hit “Shaddap You Face,” and the 2001 Reading Writing hotline jingle. The NFSA currently houses over 300,000 audio items, with one-third of its collection classified as at-risk and undergoing preservation through digitization. The collection aims to reflect the diverse experiences and identities of Australians, according to NFSA chief curator Meagan Loader.
