According to BBC News, Jaguar has unveiled its all-electric Type 01 in New York, marking the first public appearance of a new model after the brand’s controversial relaunch two years ago. The four-door “Grand Tourer” signals a radical direction for the classic marque.
The Type 01 has a long bonnet intended to recall Jaguar’s 1960s E-Type. Its electric motors produce about 1,000 horsepower, JLR says, enabling 0-62mph acceleration in 3.2 seconds. The company says the car can travel up to 320 miles at “sustained highway speed”.
JLR calls the Type 01 the “most technically advanced, powerful and aerodynamic Jaguar ever engineered”. It will carry a minimum UK price of £130,000 ($172,426), while the US starting price is $130,500.
The launch follows a 2024 rebranding campaign that drew criticism over a teaser advert and pink concept car. JLR had set out a strategy in early 2023 to invest £15bn in new models and technologies, while repositioning Jaguar as a luxury all-electric brand.
Reaction to the Type 01 has been mixed. Edmunds’ Alistair Weaver said its appearance was “polarising”, but argued Jaguar would have had “no hope” if it had designed a car that looked like anything else. The GT is expected to be the first of three new Jaguar electric designs, with the key test now whether buyers will pay for a distinctive premium EV.
