According to BBC News, Matthias Jaissle began his time as Newcastle United head coach with a 2-1 pre-season Orange Trophy victory over Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium. Jaissle urged caution after the friendly, saying Newcastle still had “a lot to work on” despite lifting silverware in his first match in charge.

Newcastle fell behind after four minutes when Filip Ugrinic scored a curling opener. The contest also saw Anthony Elanga stretchered off after a tackle by Valencia’s Jose Gaya, who was sent off. Jaissle said he was “in fear” when Elanga was in distress, but the forward was walking later and the injury was not thought to be serious after a bruised shin.

Yoane Wissa came off the bench to score twice for Newcastle, while fellow substitutes Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur impressed following their summer arrivals from Hoffenheim and Ajax. Jaissle said winning helps confidence after a hard week, praised the players’ commitment in training and gave them two days off before work resumes.

The match offered an early view of a younger Newcastle squad following the departures of Eddie Howe and key players Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon over the past year. Lukas Hornicek, Aladji Bamba and Toure made their debuts, while Steur impressed from the bench. Jaissle, who previously developed young players at Red Bull Salzburg, said: “Time is the key.”

Malick Thiaw captained Newcastle on his 25th birthday, while Jaissle left goalkeeper Nick Pope out of the squad. The head coach said he had spoken to Pope and appreciated both the player and the person. Jaissle is due to fly to Newcastle, visit St James’ Park and be formally unveiled next week.
