According to BBC News, Jamie Miller has become the first Welsh artist in 15 years to top the UK singles chart, with his viral TikTok hit Babydoll. The singer, originally from Pontprennau in Cardiff, narrowly beat Tate McRae’s Housewife to claim the UK Number 1 on Friday, according to the Official Charts Company.

The achievement makes Miller the first Welsh artist to earn a UK Number 1 single since 2011, when Sian Evans featured on DJ Fresh’s Louder. Miller, 29, is also the first solo male Welsh artist to lead the singles chart in 41 years, following Shakin’ Stevens’ 1985 festive hit Merry Christmas Everyone.

“I don’t even know what to say other than thank you so much for getting me Number 1, this is the biggest thing that’s ever happened to me in my life, I love you guys,” Miller told Charts. Babydoll, released on 7 August, rose after actress Jennifer Love Hewitt posted videos featuring the track. It then sparked a TikTok dance trend, reached number one on the US iTunes pop chart and gave Miller his first appearance on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Miller launched his career nearly a decade ago after finishing third on the sixth season of The Voice UK as a 19-year-old. He has also recorded a separate version of Babydoll with Off Campus star Antonio Cipriano, after initially joking about the idea on social media. Miller previously said he was proud of his new music and excited to share his latest album and tour it, particularly in Wales.
