JD Vance, the U.S. Vice President, expressed confidence in America’s position regarding negotiations with Iran during an appearance on Bill Maher’s HBO show, Real Time, on June 26, 2026. According to The Guardian, Vance stated that the U.S. wins “either way” in its dealings with Iran, emphasizing the destruction of Iran’s nuclear program and the country’s diminished status.

Vance highlighted that the ongoing negotiations have been fruitful, citing a decrease in oil prices and the significant reduction of Iran’s nuclear capabilities, which he claimed have been “functionally destroyed.” However, he acknowledged the complexities of the ceasefire deal established between former President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, referring to it as an arrangement that is “always going to be a little messy when you’re dealing with the Iranians.”

His comments come at a time of heightened tensions, as military strikes occurred in the Strait of Hormuz shortly before his appearance. The U.S. reported hitting Iranian targets, while Iran retaliated against U.S. forces, marking a significant escalation since the interim peace agreement was signed.

Vance also addressed criticisms of the negotiations, particularly regarding Iran’s remaining stockpile of 60%-enriched uranium. He reiterated that the U.S. maintains a strong position and expressed a willingness to transform relations with Iran if the country renounces its nuclear ambitions. Vance concluded that the U.S. holds all the cards in this situation, regardless of the outcome of the negotiations.
