Jennie Garth, known for her role as Kelly Taylor on the iconic series Beverly Hills, 90210, has opened up about her experiences with fame and personal challenges in a recent interview. According to The Guardian, Garth shared her feelings of being lost and unfulfilled as she approached her 50s, especially after her daughters began leaving home.
In March 2023, Garth expressed her frustrations in her diary, noting that acting opportunities had become scarce. She felt disconnected from the industry and was concerned about being typecast due to her age and past roles. Despite her success in the 90s, she described a sense of urgency to redefine her purpose, especially after the passing of her co-star Luke Perry in 2019 and Shannen Doherty’s cancer diagnosis in 2024.
To confront these feelings, Garth launched a podcast and wrote a memoir titled I Choose Me, aimed at women experiencing similar life standstills. The title references a pivotal moment in 90210, symbolizing her journey toward self-discovery and empowerment.
Reflecting on her early career, Garth acknowledged the unique challenges of growing up in the spotlight. She felt that her experiences on a hit show skewed her perception of normalcy and personal development. Garth emphasized the pressures of being a young actress, including sexism and unrealistic beauty standards, which she now views with a critical lens as a mother.
Garth’s journey highlights the complexities of fame and the ongoing quest for self-identity. As she navigates her 50s, she aims to inspire others to prioritize their own well-being and self-acceptance.
