According to ABC News, ABC News Queensland weather presenter Jenny Woodward has received Queensland’s Most Outstanding Contribution to Journalism award after 40 years explaining weather conditions to the state’s audience. She was presented with the honour at the Queensland Clarion Awards in Brisbane.
Woodward began her journalism career at Channel 10/4/5a in Toowoomba in the 1970s, working on children’s and special-event television. News and weather reading were among her responsibilities, and she began presenting weather in 1975. After a brief period at Channel 7 in Brisbane, she joined the ABC in 1986.
By 1987, Woodward was presenting ABC News weather alongside news presenter Rod Young and sports presenter David Mackay. At the time, the role involved collecting charts from the Bureau of Meteorology, speaking with a forecaster and returning to the studio before going to air. Woodward said she still speaks with someone at the bureau every day before reporting the weather.
Technology has changed the work, from fax machines to robotic cameras, earpiece cues and graphical maps projected using a green screen. Woodward said her focus remains on turning scientific data and weather terminology into a story audiences can understand without being overwhelmed by detail.
Her reports have also become associated with viewer-submitted photographs of weather formations and Queensland landscapes, which she said she reviews individually. Woodward received a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2024 for service to broadcast media.
