A memorial service for civil rights leader Jesse Jackson took place on Friday at the House of Hope arena in Chicago, attended by prominent political figures including Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Jill Biden, and Joe Biden. Thousands gathered to celebrate Jackson’s life and legacy, with tributes highlighting his role as a champion for the poor and dispossessed.

According to The Guardian, Obama delivered a heartfelt eulogy, praising Jackson as someone who consistently stepped forward to advocate for those in need. He drew comparisons between Jackson and the biblical prophet Isaiah, emphasizing Jackson’s impact on his own journey in politics. Obama noted that Jackson’s presidential campaign in 1988 inspired many, including himself, and credited him for paving the way for future leaders.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also honored Jackson, describing him as “an ambassador of hope for the oppressed, who met with kings and queens and presidents and dictators and clergy of all the great religions”. Pritzker expressed pride in Jackson’s roots in Chicago, where he was seen not just as a public figure but as a friend and neighbor.

President Joe Biden spoke of Jackson’s unwavering passion and courage in advocating for civil rights, acknowledging their differing backgrounds while emphasizing their shared commitment to racial equality. Biden also criticized the current administration’s values, which he claimed do not align with those of Jackson’s supporters.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, a close friend and mentee of Jackson, echoed Biden’s criticism of the current political climate, urging attendees to continue Jackson’s legacy of activism. He highlighted the necessity of following through on Jackson’s teachings to fight against injustices.

Harris reflected on Jackson’s strategic mind and ability to navigate challenges, expressing sorrow that he was not present to guide the current generation through its struggles. She recognized his role as a founder of the modern progressive coalition, emphasizing his effectiveness as an organizer.

Jackson passed away on February 17 after battling a rare neurological disorder. His contributions to civil rights, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities have left a lasting impact on American society. Plans for a memorial event in Washington, D.C., have been postponed following a rejection for Jackson to lie in honor in the Capitol’s rotunda, with no further details announced yet.
