Robert Aramayo and Jessie Buckley emerged as the standout winners at the 2026 Bafta Awards, held at London’s Southbank Centre. Aramayo, known for his role in ‘I Swear’, triumphed over notable actors, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet, to claim the best actor award. In an emotional acceptance speech, he expressed disbelief, stating, “I honestly cannot believe this.” He also made history by winning the Bafta rising star award, marking the first time an actor or actress has clinched both honors in the same year.
Buckley, who was the favorite for best actress, won the award for her portrayal of Agnes, Shakespeare’s grieving wife, in ‘Hamnet’. In her heartfelt acceptance, she dedicated the win to the women who have influenced her career, saying, “This really does belong to the women past, present and future that taught me and continue to teach me how to do it differently.” This victory makes her the first Irish actress to win this prestigious award.
The ceremony also saw ‘One Battle After Another’, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, take home six awards, including best film and best director. The film features DiCaprio in a story about a father reconnecting with his former group of revolutionaries after his daughter is kidnapped. Anderson, celebrating his first win in the directing category, urged filmmakers to continue creating without fear, asserting, “Anybody that says movies aren’t any good anymore can (expletive) right off.”
In addition to Aramayo’s wins, ‘I Swear’ secured three awards in total, with casting director Lauren Evans praising his performance as “stellar.” The evening also honored ‘Sinners’, which won three awards, including best supporting actress for Wunmi Mosaku, marking a significant achievement for British talent in this category.
Other notable wins included ‘Frankenstein’, which excelled in design categories, and ‘Mr Nobody Against Putin’, awarded best documentary.
