According to Cnbc, stocks finished higher on Friday after September’s jobs report showed U.S. employers added 29,000 jobs and unemployment rose to 4.2%. The figures were below the Dow Jones consensus for 84,000 jobs and 4.1% unemployment, strengthening expectations that the Federal Reserve could hold rates steady at its late-October meeting.
The Dow rose 0.5% on Friday, while the S&P 500 gained 0.7% and the Nasdaq climbed 1.2%, reaching an intraday all-time high before retreating slightly. For the week, however, the Dow fell 1.26% and the S&P 500 declined 0.3%. The Nasdaq gained 0.45%, supported by demand for artificial-intelligence-related shares.
Higher oil prices and rising long-term bond yields weighed on markets during the week. Oil prices pulled back Friday after a report that European nation-states were considering releasing strategic fuel reserves. Market pricing showed a 78% likelihood of the Federal Reserve holding rates in October, up from 36% a week earlier, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
Nvidia reached an all-time high Friday for the first time since May, while CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks and AMD also rose to all-time highs. Nvidia authorized an additional $150 billion in share repurchases, lifting its remaining authorization to $235 billion. Its shares finished the week up 3.95%.
Micron reported revenue of $54.23 billion, up 379% from a year earlier, and adjusted earnings of $33.42 per share. The company forecast first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $61.5 billion and adjusted earnings per share of $38.15. Its shares ended the week down 0.7% as investors focused on manufacturing-capacity spending, although Micron said roughly 75% of expected 2027 output was already spoken for.
