According to BBC News, Hampshire and England fast bowler John Turner has retired from cricket aged 25 because of persistent injuries. Turner has not played for Hampshire since last summer because of a stress fracture in his back.

The South Africa-born bowler represented England in two one-day internationals and two T20 matches on the 2024 tour of the West Indies. He had previously been selected for England’s T20 squad for the series against New Zealand, but was ruled out through injury.

“This has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make,” Turner said. He said the stress fracture had sidelined him for more than a year and, alongside his injury record, prompted him to consider his future in and away from cricket.

Turner made his Hampshire debut in 2021, taking former England captain Alastair Cook as his first wicket in a One-Day Cup match. He played 51 matches for the county in all formats and took 97 wickets. In the 2023 T20 Blast, he claimed 21 wickets at an average of 11.76 and an economy rate of 6.67.

He also played for Trent Rockets in The Hundred and completed studies for an economics degree while playing cricket. Hampshire director of cricket Giles White said Turner had been a “huge part” of the club’s success over the past five years and described him as an “exceptionally talented player.”
