On Thursday, the Governor of Jonglei State, Riek Gai Kok, held a productive meeting with the Head of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Mr Yashouardhan, to discuss strengthening cooperation in areas impacted by ongoing conflict.
During the meeting, the MSF team outlined the significant challenges faced by civilians across Jonglei State. They highlighted that the ongoing conflict between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces and forces loyal to opposition leader Dr Riek Machar has severely disrupted operations, making it increasingly difficult for humanitarian agencies to access affected communities.
The medical delegation provided an update on the situation on the ground and urged state authorities to facilitate safe and secure access for humanitarian organisations to deliver essential services. MSF representatives noted that they are currently operating in Chuil and Pieri Payam, where many displaced civilians have sought refuge.
Governor Riek commended MSF for its continued efforts and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of humanitarian workers. He emphasised that the government’s top priority remains the safety and wellbeing of civilians in conflict-affected areas.
The meeting was attended by several state officials, including the Jonglei State Minister for Health. Governor Riek had recently returned to the state capital following a month-long medical treatment in Nairobi, Kenya.
