Spanish tenor José Carreras will mark his 80th birthday with a major all-star concert at The Gabba in Brisbane this December. The event, titled “Carreras & Friends,” will feature an impressive lineup that includes Robbie Williams, The Corrs, Ronan Keating, Anne Wilson of Heart, Darren Hayes of Savage Garden, Natalie Imbruglia, and more. Over 90 musicians from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra will back the performances, leading to an anticipated “all-star finale.” According to ABC News, this concert marks the first live music event at The Gabba in years, a venue primarily used for cricket and AFL.

The Gabba is scheduled for demolition following the 2032 Olympics, making this concert a unique occasion for fans. The last performances at the venue were by Taylor Swift and Charli XCX in 2019, along with Adele in 2017. Queensland’s tourism minister, Andrew Powell, believes the concert will bring an estimated $11 million into the Queensland economy, emphasizing that Carreras is one of the world’s most celebrated performers.

The concert is organized by Echo Pacific Entertainment, led by promoter Andrew McManus. This event bears similarities to the famous “Pavarotti & Friends” charity concerts, though the Brisbane lineup is described as more humble. Local artist Mark Vincent expressed his excitement about performing with Carreras, sharing a personal connection to the tenor through his grandfather’s encouragement.

Brisbane band Sheppard also expressed their enthusiasm, with vocalist Amy Sheppard calling it a “pinch-yourself moment” to be performing alongside such legendary artists. Carreras & Friends happens at the Gabba on Saturday, December 5, promising to be a memorable celebration of music and talent.
