According to ABC News, Adelaide Crows player Josh Worrell has been convicted and fined $2,400 after hitting a pedestrian with his car in July. The 25-year-old was sentenced in the Adelaide Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to an aggravated charge of driving without due care over the July 10 crash.
The court heard Worrell ran a red light on Port Road before striking the pedestrian, who was walking to work. The victim suffered a 2-centimetre laceration to his head and other minor injuries. A charge alleging Worrell failed to stop, assist and present to police was dropped by prosecutors.
Worrell spent three hours with the victim after the collision and took him to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the court heard. Magistrate Rodney Oates described Worrell’s response after the crash as “exemplary”, saying the defendant did all he could to support the complainant during what must have been a highly stressful time.
Magistrate Oates said Worrell had shown excellent character and qualities in the circumstances following the accident, while also acknowledging the harm experienced by the pedestrian. He said the court was glad the injuries were not more serious. The magistrate recorded a conviction and did not disqualify Worrell from holding a licence.
