According to ABC News, ACT Supreme Court Justice Andrew Muller has found Manfred Uhle murdered his wife, Wanda, at their home in Canberra’s south in June 2024. Uhle, now 88, had been accused of stabbing Wanda Uhle, 78, to death at their home in the suburb of Gordon.
Uhle was charged with murder but was found unfit to plead earlier in 2026, leading Justice Muller to hold a special hearing. In his reasons, the judge found beyond reasonable doubt that Uhle repeatedly stabbed his wife with a knife, resulting in her death.
Justice Muller also found Uhle’s actions were voluntary. He said Uhle’s movements were controlled and administered repeatedly, and that he was conscious. The judge concluded that Uhle had engaged in the conduct required for the offence charged on the indictment.
The couple had been in a relationship for about 60 years at the time of the murder. In the months before Wanda Uhle’s death, family members had noted episodes of confusion and memory loss experienced by Uhle, which continued to deteriorate. He has remained in custody since the day of the murder.
The prosecution has argued that Uhle should be remanded in custody for immediate review by the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal under mental health legislation. Justice Muller said detention in a correctional facility should be a last resort, but that no other option presently appeared available. He will allow the parties to further examine whether Uhle could be released to facilitate an ACAT assessment for a mental health order. The matter is due to return to court in October.
