A 12-year-old boy from Jurien Bay, Rhys Martin, has caught a blue marlin weighing 272.2 kilograms during a recent fishing trip. This catch could potentially set a new national record, pending verification by the Game Fishing Association of Australia. According to ABC News, the marlin is 10 kilograms heavier than the previous junior record holder’s catch.

Rhys reeled in the marlin last week, a feat that took about one-and-a-half hours. His father, Brett Martin, who was at the helm of the boat, expressed pride in his son’s achievement. Rhys has already established himself as a skilled angler with four Australian junior records under his belt and two more pending.

The young angler began fishing at the age of two and has developed a passion for the sport, often fishing with friends in local waters. Rhys mentioned that while breaking records is satisfying, he enjoys the challenge of fishing and the time spent on the ocean.

The Martin family is committed to supporting Rhys’s fishing endeavors, and they emphasize the importance of not wasting any part of the fish caught. They regularly share fresh and smoked fish with friends and family in their supportive Jurien Bay community. Rhys’s recent catch follows a trip to Exmouth, where he sought to break the black marlin record but returned home to achieve this impressive blue marlin catch instead.
