According to ABC News, Justice Thomas Bradley has been announced as Queensland’s 28th governor and will be sworn in on November 1. He will succeed Dr Jeannette Young, who has served in the role for five years.

Justice Bradley has served on the Supreme Court since 2018 and moved to the Court of Appeal in 2025. Premier David Crisafulli said the “born and raised Queenslander” understood the state’s decentralised nature after living in both the far north and south-east.

Bradley called the appointment a “tremendous honour” and said he wanted Queenslanders in all communities to feel a sense of unity. He said he shared the goals of previous governors to carry out constitutional responsibilities with dignity, fairness and commitment to the rule of law, while supporting a diverse range of Queensland groups.

Outside the courts, Bradley has been chair of the Brisbane Festival Giving Committee, an ambassador for the Pinnacle Foundation and a member of the Gallery of Modern Art Foundation Committee. He said discussions with the premier began in May and that he was formally advised last week that His Majesty the King had approved the appointment.

Dr Young described Bradley as a “fantastic choice” and said she hoped to continue supporting Queenslanders and promoting volunteering after her responsibilities end in November. The Supreme Court judiciary said Bradley would continue hearing civil cases as a judge of appeal in the short term, then take leave before beginning as governor.
