According to ABC News,

Kalamunda Community Radio (KCR) has successfully transitioned to a new frequency of 88.9 FM following a re-distribution of frequencies by the Australian Communications and Media Authority. This change comes as ABC Radio Perth moves to KCR’s former frequency of 102.5 FM, alongside other stations like NewsRadio and Radio National, which are also shifting from AM to FM.

Despite the challenges posed by this frequency change, KCR’s chair, Roger Jennings, expressed optimism about the move. He noted that the station, which operates on lower power and is limited to its license area, is now positioned in a part of the dial that may be easier for listeners to find, especially in car radios that often skip over stations at higher frequencies. “Down in the 88.9 area, we’re more likely to be found by car radios and things like that, we think,” Mr. Jennings stated.

KCR, entirely run by volunteers and funded through grants and sponsorships, serves a vital role in broadcasting hyper-local stories that larger stations may overlook. Jennings emphasized the importance of community radio in addressing local events and issues, which broader broadcasters might not cover adequately. “It fills a gap that way,” he remarked.

The station, which began its journey in 2000 from the old Kalamunda Police station, has since moved to purpose-built studios in the Gooseberry Hill Community Centre. Jennings highlighted the dedication required from the station’s approximately 30 volunteer presenters, who curate diverse programming that includes genres from rock to classical music. As KCR settles into its new frequency, the team is focused on maintaining its listener base and continuing to provide unique content.

Kalamunda Community Radio is now actively encouraging its audience to tune in to 88.9 FM, while also leveraging online platforms to reach a broader audience, including international listeners. The station aims to consolidate its presence in the community and ensure that its loyal listeners are aware of the frequency change.
