According to ABC News, Aaron Kemp, 20, has been denied bail after appearing in Alice Springs Local Court charged with hit-and-run driving causing death over a fatal crash on Len Kittle Drive in May.

A 57-year-old man was struck and killed near the Men’s Shed building at Blatherskite Park, police say. Kemp is also charged with driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle without a licence while under the influence of alcohol.

Prosecutor Devender Anand told the court that witnesses in the car said Kemp was under the influence of alcohol and cannabis when the man was struck. One witness reported that Kemp said he thought he had hit “a ditch or something” and did not stop the car, Mr Anand said. DNA found on the vehicle’s fuel tank was later confirmed as a match for the dead man, the court heard.

In refusing bail, Judge Jon Bortoli said the prosecution case appeared strong, referring to the DNA evidence and what he said were three other witnesses placing Kemp in the driver’s seat. The judge also cited an allegation that Kemp later said he had “killed someone” and called himself “a mad c***”.

Defence lawyer Kimberly Hammerton said Kemp’s family had offered support and a safe environment if he were released, and expressed concern about his mental health. Mr Anand argued that Kemp’s criminal history in South Australia, including theft and bail breaches, made him a flight risk. Kemp was remanded in custody and is due to return to court on December 3.
