Khadija Shaw’s future with Manchester City has taken a positive turn as she announced a new four-year contract during the club’s celebratory parade in front of 19,000 fans. According to BBC News, the 29-year-old striker’s decision comes after speculation about her departure, particularly with Chelsea interested in her services.
Shaw has been a pivotal player for City this season, scoring 21 goals in 22 Women’s Super League matches, and she showcased her importance by scoring the opening goal in City’s 4-0 FA Cup final victory over Brighton. Her performance not only secured the win but also helped City achieve their first FA Cup triumph since 2020, following their recent success in the WSL.
Manager Andree Jeglertz expressed his satisfaction with Shaw’s commitment, highlighting her role in the club’s strategy and success. “We have Bunny Shaw in our team and we play a certain way to get the best out of her,” Jeglertz stated, emphasizing that retaining her was crucial for the team’s future ambitions.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding her contract, Shaw maintained her focus and professionalism throughout the season. She described the double victory as a significant achievement and reaffirmed her commitment to the club, stating, “I’ve always said that Manchester is my home. It took a while, but we finally got [the contract agreement] done.”
With Shaw’s new deal secured, the challenge for Manchester City will be to build on their recent successes and maintain their competitive edge. The club aims to evolve and continue winning titles, as they prepare for the upcoming season, which will also include the pressures of European football. Former City striker Ellen White noted the need for the club to be proactive in expanding their squad to ensure ongoing dominance in both domestic and international competitions.
