According to BBC News, London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan was convicted and fined over an untaxed 24-year-old Nissan Micra, though his team says the case resulted from a scam and that the vehicle did not belong to him.

The Labour politician, 55, was found guilty last month in a private Single Justice Procedure hearing in Herefordshire after a DVLA prosecution for keeping an unlicensed vehicle. A magistrate convicted Khan in his absence and ordered him to pay a £220 fine, £85 in costs and £35.84 in unpaid vehicle tax.

Court documents show letters concerning the unpaid tax were sent to a Gordon Ramsay restaurant in east London. The DVLA said the blue Nissan Micra, first registered in 2002, was seen untaxed on 24 January and that Khan’s name and date of birth appeared on government records linked to the car.

A spokesperson for the mayor said: “This is a scam, which is a crime.” Khan’s adviser told BBC London that the DVLA was urgently examining reopening the case with a view to withdrawing the prosecution, and would investigate the false registration.

An application has been made to the magistrates’ court to reopen the case. The DVLA said it was reviewing the matter and investigating the circumstances of the prosecution. If the case is reopened, Khan could argue he did not know of it because correspondence was sent to the wrong address.
