According to Allafrica, South Sudan President Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit met Darfur Region Governor Minni Arko Minawi in Juba on Monday to discuss developments in Sudan and the country’s humanitarian, political and security crisis.

Minawi said he briefed Kiir on the scale of the tragedy facing Sudanese people and on violations against civilians, including violations with racial and ethnic dimensions that he attributed to the Dagalo family militia. He also raised concerns over what he described as a plot to displace indigenous populations from Darfur and Kordofan and replace them with mercenaries and foreigners.

The governor said such plans threaten Sudan’s social fabric, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He said the continuation of the war “serves neither the Sudanese people nor the peoples of the region,” and called on Kiir to play an active role in efforts to end the conflict, uphold Sudan’s unity and prevent partition.

Minawi also requested a South Sudanese government delegation visit Sudan to help address issues related to the Juba Peace Agreement and support completion of its outstanding provisions. The meeting addressed the situation of Sudanese people living in South Sudan and the challenges they face.

Kiir said his government would work to address those concerns and facilitate procedures for Sudanese wishing to return home while preserving their dignity and ensuring proper treatment. He said instability in Sudan directly affects South Sudan, reaffirming support for Sudan’s unity and stability and calling for cooperation to prevent security violations along the shared border.
